Dates in Holy Quran:
“And shake the trunk of
date-palm towards you, it will let fall fresh ripe-dates upon you.” [Surah
Maryam (Mary) :Verse 25]
Therein are fruits,
date-palms producing sheathed fruit-stalks (enclosing dates). (55:11)
Then We
brought forth for you therewith gardens of date-palms and grapes, wherein is
much fruit for you, and whereof you eat. (23:19)
With it He causes to grow
for you the crops, the olives, the date-palms, the grapes, and every kind of
fruit. Verily! In this is indeed an evident proof and a manifest SIGN for
people who give thought. (16:11)
“Or you have a garden of
date-palms and grapes, and cause rivers to gush forth in their midst
abundantly; (17:91)
And We have placed
therein gardens of the date-palm and grapes, and We have caused springs of
water to gush forth therein. (36:34)
And from the fruits of
date-palms and grapes, you derive strong drink (this was before the order of
the prohibition of the alcoholic drinks) and a goodly provision. Verily,
therein is indeed a sign for people who have wisdom. (16:67)
Would any of you
wish to have a garden with date-palms and vines(pure). (2:266)
Dates in Hadith:
۞ Narrated Saud (R.A):
The Prophet (ï·º) said, “If somebody takes some `Ajwa dates every morning,
he will not be affected by poison or magic on that day till night.” (Another
narrator said seven dates). (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Medicine, Book 76, Hadith 82)
۞ Narrated A man:
A man from among the Companions of the Prophet (ï·º) said: The Prophet (ï·º)
forbade (mixing) unripe dates and dried dates, and (mixing) raisins and dried
dates.

۞ Narrated Abu Huraira (R.A):
Once the Prophet (ï·º) distributed dates among his companions and gave each one
seven dates. He gave me seven dates too, one of which was dry and hard, but
none of the other dates was more liked by me than that one, for it prolonged my
chewing it. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Food, Meals Book 70, Hadith 39)
۞ Anas bin Malik narrated (R.A):
“The Messenger of Allah would break the fast with fresh dates before performing
Salat. If there were no fresh dates then (he would break the fast) with dried
dates, and if there were no dried dates then he would take a few sips of
water.”

۞ Narrated Ibn `Umar (R.A):
I was with the Prophet (ï·º) while he was eating fresh dates. He said, “From the trees
there is a tree which resembles a faithful believer.” I wanted to say that it
was the date palm, but I was the youngest among them (so I kept quiet). He
added, “It is the date palm.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Sales and Trade, Book
34, Hadith 155)
۞ Ibn Umar (R.A) reported Allah’s Apostle (ï·º) forbidding the sale of fruits until
their good condition becomes evident and the purchase of dates for dates.

۞ Narrated Abu Al-Bakhtari (R.A):
I asked Ibn `Umar about Salam (the fruits of) date-palms. He replied, “The
Prophet (ï·º) forbade the sale of dates till their benefit becomes
evident and fit for eating and also the sale of silver (for gold) on credit.” I
asked Ibn `Abbas about Salam for dates and he replied, “The Prophet (ï·º)
forbade the sale of dates till they were fit for eating and could be
estimated.” (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Sales in which a Price is paid for Goods to be
Delivered Later (As-Salam), Book 35, Hadith 10)
